Georgia pawn shops are regulated under the state pawnbroker law (O.C.G.A. § 44-12-130 and following). A pawn is a loan against an item you leave with the shop: the pawn ticket must state the amount, the charges, the maturity date and the grace period, and you get the item back when you repay. If you do not, the shop keeps it; there is no further debt and no effect on your credit.

Georgia caps pawn charges at 25 percent of the principal per 30 day period for the first 90 days and 12.5 percent per 30 days after that, which is why the same item can cost very different amounts at different shops. Every shop must record your ID and report transactions to local police, so stolen goods are traceable.
